Foiling! Where is it going

Where is foiling heading?

So, we are about 5 years into what some might call the new wave of foiling.  The time where foiling stepped out of the shadows of the few big wave and super early pioneers that were playing around with what was then a high-end elite-only sport that many would not even dare to look at or attempt.

The big turning point that many will agree on, is Kai Lenny downwinding in Maui on the Maliko run with a cut-up 12’6 raceboard, this was the point for many where they stood up and said this is the future!! This was back in May 2016!!!

Throughout the last 5 years, the sport of foiling has grown and taken on so many different forms.  The ideas and growth have been something that has gone in a 100 different directions all of which have opened people’s eyes as to what the future could hold and lead us to a point where we are now saying, “what is the next step?”.  Where to now?  And how big will this really be?

Many sports have come before foiling and have had crazy growth only to flatten out before they have really become what people thought the future should have been, so, will Foiling head down this same path?  Or will something within this crazy and out there sport stand up and take the run we all hope for?

We thought it was about time to look at some of the main areas that this foiling sport has branched off into and see if we can look forward to the future and maybe see one or maybe all growing into a major main steam water sport!

WIND WING FOILING - Possibly the easiest way to learn Foiling?  Having seen and watched many people that come from a NON-Foiling or NON-Kiting / Windsurfing background pick up a Wind Wing and Foiling set up to only get right into Wind wing Foiling. If they are persistent in the learning curve, then in a few weeks they are up and going.  Tacking and foiling around.

Wind Wing Foiling would have to have the fastest learning curve and the results come fast no matter what your background.  So, with Wind Wing Foiling so easy to learn is this the future for taking foiling to the next level?  And if it is, what kind of Wind Wing Foiling will this be?

We are already seeing in Europe Wind Wing Pro Tours with Course racing, Slalom, Downwind, and freestyle.  Very similar to what we already see on Windsurfing Tours, so maybe this is what we will see.  Or does Wind Wing Foiling open itself up for more of a Downwind Free Riding Sport?  As we see already with some of the Pro’s there are Tricks and Jumps also, which indicates that it’s leaning itself more towards Kiteboarding.   Really, the Wind Wing aspects are endless.

The Wind Wing side of the sport does get a little messy however as it does cross over into sailing, and they have already laid claim to this in some areas and rightly so.  While in some ways the path is already laid out for Wind Wing Foiling and for now it looks set to follow in the path of windsurfing one has to wonder is this the right move?  Windsurfing is a great sport, but we all know how this sport has played out and to just follow down the same road just might not be the best idea.  One hopes that people see the uniqueness to Wind Wing Foiling and allow it to take its own path and not just follow the path already taken.

DOWNWIND FOILING - Maybe this is the pinnacle of all the Foiling sports.  Something that is like winning the lotto when you can do it or just plain hell if you can’t.  Downwind Foiling in many people's eyes is all the pure heart and soul that foiling is about, it can be the most peaceful uncrowded way to free surf the power of the ocean all while feeling at one with the sea and all the fabulous creatures it holds.

With saying all this one may think then, why is Downwind Foiling not going to be the number one area for all the people who foil?  It’s the pinnacle right, so this is it, we have a winner!!  Well, let's just break this down a little more and find out why Downwind Foiling might struggle to be the best of the best.

Downwind Foiling can be probably the hardest of all the foil sports to learn, you need to combine some SUP skills along with foiling skills and this is part of the challenge for many at the start.  Learning how to catch the ocean swells is a little tricky for many people who have never done a downwinder, so combining a small board, a foil and a paddle can throw up a few challenges of course.  All this can be overcome and from 5 years ago to now A LOT has changed including all the gear has become far, far better all of which has made learning much easier now than it has ever been.

The biggest challenge is Downwind Foiling is like many other downwind sports and although unreal for those that can do it and those who are racing it is boring to watch for spectators as most of the time when you Downwind Foil you are way out to sea where no one can see you. All downwind sports have this same issue, and it is a big one if you want the sport to go more mainstream. Downwind foiling will grow, and races will get very good numbers and with the right sponsors and a few lucky breaks downwind wind foiling could be as big as any of the current downwind sports no worries but as a sport for the masses then maybe not yet. One of the biggest areas for growth in Downwind Foiling is the free ride aspect and just the pure joy and thrill this gives, and this is the side that will grow the fastest for Downwind Foiling.

PRONE FOILING - Those that are lucky enough to live close to waves and get to prone foiling most days will say how much fun this is, it offers the chance to escape the crowded surf line-ups and head of down the beach to a wave that more than likely any sane normal surfer would turn their nose up at.

Already there have been some fun wave foiling events around the world (link here) and from the looks of these they are great fun and could really get a good local following in the areas that have the conditions to run them.

Will these styles of events take off is the question or will Prone foiling just fall to the full free rider’s way and it just becomes one of the funnest ways to ride a wave without going down the road of comps and events? Prone foiling is an area that is still a big unknown and because it’s still just so much fun to go and do, many might ask why make it complicated and bring comps into it. Why not just leave it raw and super inviting to all who want to escape the rat race of normal surfing?

I can see it heading both ways, but right now we are on the fence so time will tell on this one!!

FLATWATER PUMPING - Lungs burning, lactic acid filled muscles and 1 to 6 minutes of pure pain!!  Sounds terrible right?  Well, it’s not!!

Flatwater pumping could hold the key for what is to come and when one opens the mind to what could be then you can see that us flapping our arms around looking rather strange is also an area, we as humans strive for.

If we are looking at a racing still that the masses could do that is super tight with lots of frills and spills and something that can take some skill to be good at then flatwater pump racing could be the ticket to success.

Right now, I don't even know if this style of racing has even been tried but from looking at an area that could be one the biggest sides of the spot then flatwater pumping for sure has to be right in the mix.  It has a lot going for it before it even starts as it would be a sport that can be done on any body of water anywhere in the world and this opens the door up to so much more than all the other areas of foiling as many require wind or waves to be successful.

The concept is so new it really does not even exist yet, but I am sure if you talk to any Foiler they can already see it.  It could be anything from a short pump course to a flat straight out 200m pump right up to 1km pump fest.  As foils are getting better and better than pumping for 6 mins or more will be fully doable if not already!!  Already we are seeing people launching from docks all around the world (link here) and this is just the beginning.

It will be fitness and skill combined, it will be something anyone can learn, and you don’t need to live by the ocean as a small Dam in the backyard really could be enough.  It might not be the most fun or the prettiest to watch but it will be unique and if done right it could be very exciting.

If we are right now looking for the biggest growth potential area, then this has to be right up the front!

SUP FOILING - In 5 years or so we have seen board size come way down and boards have changed a lot making the sport easy to learn.  Head down to any local beach these days and you will see someone SUP Foiling or someone trying to learn SUP Foiling.

Generally only done on point breaks, or somewhere with a longish running fun wave that isn’t too big of a limit to where SUP Foiling might be and how it might grow. So does this mean SUP Foiling will only be in certain pockets around the World as it rules out harsh dumping beach breaks.

Pump up in the flat.  SUP Foiling is all timing and something that takes a fair bit of time and practise / frustration, but once up and pumping in the flat it’s a matter of staying up.  This could lead to Flatwater SUP Pump Up racing, same idea as dock starting with a Prone Foiling board and flat water pumping but you are SUP Pump Up foiling, harder to do.  SUP Foiling could be more of a Wave Riding event in Longer Point break waves with turns / style etc... So, SUP Foiling really limits itself to only a couple types of different aspects Waves or Pumping up in the Flat however, SUP Foiling in the waves is by far one of the most popular sides of Foiling so this style will not disappear and we will see many Sup Foilers enjoying waves around the world for a long time yet.  Possibly leading them into other Styles of Foiling.

EDGE 3.0 in Detail...

144067152_212921123849331_588009057094190033_n.jpg

What does it do best?

Flat water, waves, turning, sprinting are at the front of what the Edge 3 does best. It feels great in the flatwater with a nice glide. It is a board that is great for turning and course racing and has a great feel when walking on the deck of the board.

It is also a very fun board for catching small waves and will pick up and ride the smallest bump with ease, this makes it a great fun board for those who love chasing boat wash to those who have small rolling waves and still want a board that surfs these small waves really well.

If you also have good footwork on a board then the Edge 3 can also work very well in downwind and it is a board that likes to be trimmed nicely, this can make a very fast and effective downwind board if you are someone who likes to move your feet a lot.

A very good all around style board that ticks a lot of boxes, from flatwater to touring to almost everything in between the EDGE 3.0 is a board that can really do it all. It’s top end construction makes it an easy choice for those wanting longevity in a board and also wanting a board that is super lightweight.

EDGE 3.0 is HERE!!!

EDGE 3.0

Kenny Kaneko - Japan trump paddle session WINNER - 21km RACE

EDGE 3.0 has finally arrived!! This is the 3rd generation of the Edge series of boards and after 2 plus years the Edge 3.0 is here and set to take the place of the ever poplar Edge 2.0.

This is not just a board where we have slapped a new paint job on it, it is a board that has had some major changes and even from the looks of it off the water this is super easy to see. We took a board that was the Edge 2.0 and completely thought outside the box from where this great board already was and the changes are amazing.

With the Edge 3.0 we took a lot of influence from the Edge pro 2.0 as this board has revolutionized how race boards work and already was one of the biggest changes in race board design in many years. We wanted to take all the great things the Edge pro 2.0 had going and push this in to the flatter deck board of the Edge 3.0. What we have ended up with is a board that has very similar speed to the Edge pro 2.0 but a board that turns on a dime and can surf small waves with ease. The Edge 3.0 is a board that one would choose as the perfect Flatwater/surf/course race board, with amazing speed and glide in a package that turns and surf this really could be the perfect one board quiver for many people.

Already a board that has great race results with ONE rider Kenny Kaneko racing it to victory in the latest big race in Japan called the Trump paddle sessions where he took the win ahead of a super tough Japan line up off riders.

Constructions have also been simplified with 3 full production sizes which are full PVC sandwich molded in either Dynamic(Carbon glass mix full PVC sandwich) and the top end Full carbon full PVC sandwich. These construction are the strongest on the market and offer amazing light weight that will blow the competition away. Custom sizes are also available in our custom carbon skin Tech.

Edge 3.0 is available to order NOW with many of the ONE importers already getting sample boards built and on the way to them while a luck few already have them like the Japan and Italy so if you are close by make sure to hit these guys up for a demo!!

COVID-19 and ONE OCEAN SPORTS

Foil afternoon pic V2.jpg

We are now pretty much 8 weeks into Covid-19 and we here at ONE thought this would be a good time to just give everyone a short update on where ONE sits in amongst all this craziness that has been happening.

So ONE and Covid-19 has this really changed much for ONE? well not really we have had a few delays in production but this has just been a flow on effect from what happened in China and even though none of our products are made in China it still did cause a few delays in getting boards out on time. We do apologise if anyone has been effected by this and please rest assure we are working super hard to get everything back onto schedule so these delays are a thing of the past sooner rather than later. but out side of these small delays everything else for ONE is running as planned and some very exciting projects are now well underway.

As we type this we have good orders of boards heading to the UK, Germany, Australia, Japan and the US/Canada so if you have been waiting the good news is they are on there way!!

We now have released the HOLLOW GT construction which just gives the hollow board market that slightly cheaper option while keeping the performance that we are now coming to expect from the hollow boards.

The new mold is now finished for the 14 x 25.5 EDGE PRO 2.0, this gives all those looking for that slightly wider flat water board a super good option. The Edge pro 2.0 has been one of the biggest changes in the SUP racing world for quite some time and now to extend this range to the wider 25.5 model has just opened up this board to a whole range of new paddlers.

Edge pro 2.0 Ad.jpg

So a few small delays which always sucks but all in all everything is still all go here at ONE, we have a few things that we can not quite talk about just yet but over the next month we will have some more exciting news that should really froth out the foilers amongst us but that’’s enough on that for now!!

Clear water shot.jpg

HOLLOW GT NEW!!!!!!!

The NEW HOLLOW GT construction in now HERE!!

What is this new hollow construction? well we have had our Elite Hollow boards out now for a little while and while these boards are amazing with crazy light weights they do come at a premium on the price side and for us at ONE we want to be able to share the Hollow board stoke with more than those who can only afford the lightest and super top end gear.

So we set to work on getting the same feeling board as our top end lightweight Hollow board into a cheaper package and to do this we didn’t want to sacrifice just how good the hollow boards feel. The end product that we have come up with feels amazing it’s still super stiff just like the top end boards has all the same feeling patterns as the top end Elite boards and is still amazingly strong like the top end Elite boards. So what is the difference you might ask and the really only difference is weight, with our GT Hollow coming in about 2-2.5kg heavier than our top end elite Carbon Hollow board. Performance on the water is so close that once the board is in the water it is very hard to tell them apart. The finish is still amazing and really when sitting on the beach it would be hard to tell the two models apart.

Of course if you like your boards super light then the Hollow Elite is still the way to go but if you want a board that really is still similar weight to many other big brands full carbon top end boards but at a crazy good price point for a hollow board then the NEW Hollow GT might just be the board you are looking for!!

Getting this board made has been one Hell of a story! Not to mention the mission actually getting it to the start of the SUP 11 Cities race Holland. A massive amount of work by our amazing factory to get what we think is one of the best looking boards ever made to the point of being ready in the super short time frame we gave them, well is just amazing and just cements why we get our board made here. These guys are not just our board makers they are so much more more and this is why we can produce amazing things like this.

UPDATE>>>

So after SUP racer released the EDGE pro 2.0 yesterday at the SUP 11 CITY TOUR in Holland we have had many questions, so we thought we would answer a bunch of these here so everyone can get the answers at the same time.

Question 1: Does it only come in 21.5” and 23.5” sizes?

Answer: No, the 14ft Edge PRO 2.0 can come in any size you like but if you want it in Hollow then these are the 21.5 and 23.5 sizes, if you want a size out side this then it has to be made in Carbon skin in ultralight or standard carbon. If we get a lot of requests for a larger size in Hollow then we will look at this option so please if you would like wider then let us know.

Question 2: Does it turn?

Answer: Yes and it turns quite well, it can take a bit of practice but once you work it out you can turn it as good as most square tail boards.

Question 3: Is the custom colour you did for the 11 cities board just a one off?

Answer: No, we can do custom colours on any board and if you pre-order then this is a option you can take advantage of. If you check out our pages or website you will see many different colour combos.

Question 4: Who is a board like this for?

Answer: Well, If you are someone who wants the fastest then this is the kind of board you are more than likely wanting. Maybe not the best first board for someone but if you want a board for all these long distance races where glide of the board is key then this is it. A lot of our top riders will race this board and it will and anyone that is looking for that something extra.

Question 5: Is it a boat or canoe?

Answer: Haha this is always a funny one and the answer is of course is no it is 100% a stand up paddle board. Gone are the days when we were just trying to make over size surfboards and if you want to go fast then shapes like this are the way that it has to be. With our sport also so diverse and really only a small part has anything to do with the surfing side we do feel that a majority of people now paddling have no problem with boards now heading in this direction.

Question 6: Are these for sale yet?

Answer: Yes, these are now in full production and we have already shipped many out, if you would like to order one please contact us and we can either help you direct or help put you in contact with someone who has them on order.

Do you have more questions? please feel free to ask away and we will do our best to answer them or send us an email directly to jacko@onestanduppaddle.com or angie@onestanduppaddle.com

HOLLOW - Pushing the Limits of Quality & performance!

ONE has finished all Testing and the Cat is out of the Bag.

We have made what we believe to be a game changing construction - HOLLOW Carbon Molded

The Finished Product is remarkable!

Light and Strong but also Perfection

What makes HOLLOW boards feel so different and why would you want this construction over a Foam core board?

A lucky few have already experienced our Hollow Storm ‘s in Australia and the feedback is exactly as we want from our customers that have demo’d one or been lucky enough to get one of these boards so far “WOW it’s like riding on AIR, it’s such a different feeling, it’s amazing” YEP we know, this is exactly want we want to bring to our customers. We want you to Love your board, love that feeling of flying on the water. Our Hollow construction gives you this experience.

Is it Tough? Yes Extremely Tough! Full Carbon,

Is it Lighter? YES to give you an idea the 14ft x 23” Storm 2.0 Dugout is coming out at 10kg finished

Is it Faster? YES, the shape is the same board as the standard Storm but it gives you the feeling of floating higher on the water, it’s flightier and catches any bumps with way less effort. The standard Storm is a amazing board the hollow is just the same but different!

Is it the same shape as my Current Storm 2.0? YES it is but just in Hollow Carbon Tech.

Is it way more Pricey to Buy? No, it will cost a little more than your normal Carbon race board but nothing crazy so make sure to contact your nearest ONE dealer for local pricing or if no local shop or importer contact us direct and we will be able to help you out any where in the world.

Will Hollow replace my foam core board? No and each construction have there place, the hollow construction just gives those who want nothing but the best a place to go. The regular carbon race boards are still amazing and if hollow was not a option they would be right at the top in all areas. Hollow has just opened a the door for those who are looking for that something different or those that might already be used to paddling hollow craft like skis and OC1.

As we have to Mold these boards we have available now to order from your shop or distributor now in …

14ft STORM 2.0 in 23” 24.5” 26” 28”

14ft EVO 2.0 in 22.5” 24” More bigger sizes are been worked on now. (EVO pro 2.0 to be released soon)

We will be adding all our Dugout Style boards to our Hollow construction line as time goes on. which will see our hollow line in Storms 2.0 , Evo Pro 2.0 , Edge Pro 2.0.

20190502_160604.jpg

We have been Testing our Hollow boards for a long time now including our Unlimited 17’11 Dugout with amazing results.

Another exciting thing is our Team rider Kenny Kaneko will be riding a 17’11 x 23” Hollow Unlimited for his Molokai to Oahu Race this year. This was the very first hollow board we made for ONE.

Australia will be one of the First countries to receive the Hollow STORM and EVO 2.0 this coming August, Hong Kong very soon and Canada has their first Hollow board arriving start of June and this board will be at the Gorge Paddle Challenge.

We feel moving towards this construction removes the need for FOAM core’s, Surfboard foam core’s inevitably is bad for the environment and long term (Talking many many years down the track) Foam will be frowned upon.

Hollow boards are nothing new and You could say there are already some brands trying their hand at this type of board, 1 brand in Europe also have made it successful but we at ONE want it available to the whole world. Everyone deserves this Level of Perfection in a Race board.

So be sure to contact us either Directly or Contact your Distributor now and find out when you can get your hands on a Hollow Board!

The first shipment of Hollow boards heading to Australia have almost SOLD out already!!! Ask anyone that has tried this construction from us and the response is amazing.

Our ONE Story....

Welcome to ONE…

So you are on our website checking us out and some may know who we are and others might have no idea.

For those that know us we guess it is a little easier to to understand what ONE is about.

Jacko, Steve and Ben Testing Boards in Currumbin Creek / ONE HQ

For those that might be on our site for the very first time and reading about ONE we hope the below Story gives you a understanding of Who we are, What we are about and Want to achieve.

Our Story…. So where did ONE Ocean sports come from and what is it all about? Well we guess we are just like many others that start a small business and the enticement doing something we love and from the very beginning this was a big part of why we started ONE.

With both Jacko and myself having travelled the world paddling and racing and being involved with every level of paddling from the very start of the sport. We started out by paddling on a big old borrowed 11ft sup board over 12 years ago, then fast forward to now - current time and we are involved in the sport at the highest level, winning World Titles for Racing and travelling the world. We have seen many things in our travels and see what has worked and what has not.

We are a quality based brand and this is something we feel can get a little lost these days, it's easy to get sucked into the race to the bottom for any business and where the quality gets lost for profits. This is NOT ONE!! We are not interested in how we can make a product cheaper. If it means any form of step backwards in quality or performance then we are not interested!

The ONE.jpg

The word got out pretty fast that ONE were producing amazing SUP boards and we started growing all over the world. However compared to the Big Brands we are still Small but we never think Small. We do everything ourselves, we don’t employ anyone else, so when you see a spelling mistake on our Post’s, email’s or on our Website it has most probably come from Angie OOPPS sorry. Sometimes things can get crazy for us as we do take everything on ourselves. We are not a big corporate company and most probably will never be as we love the sport to much and we put back in to Board Development and technology some would say too much but that is what we do. The story with ONE OCEAN SPORTS is more than Angie and Jacko who are the founders it is about making products that stand out from the rest and have the love and care put into every board you would expect . Our Business partners are also involved in racing, foiling and also work in their own companies outside of ONE, you all have most probably met them before too.

Not many people know our backgrounds. Jacko worked hard as a Labourer working the standard 5 or 6 days per week outside. Angie worked for a Large Fast Food company (some would say also pretty overweight) and worked her way up to regional manager but this lifestyle for both was never going to last and at the age of about 30 it all changed. We were also professional kitesurfers for many years, Jacko even Winning Australia Wave Titles but then we stood up n a SUP board!!! Our life changed, we loved it!!! Big old 11ft board, surfing and cruising in the Flats. We were hooked, the rest is history..

Ben Tardrew our designer is who we believe to be one of the best board designers in the world. A family guy with Twins and has spent many years Top level sailing and just loves to make boards go fast. Ben lives 1km away from ONE HQ in Currumbin so quite often you will even find the Twins here with Ben hanging out.

Ben Tardrew - on one of the first 12’6 EVO boards we did

For us going into season 2019 we are working to have a full production range of boards that are either Moulded PVC sandwich or full Moulded hollow boards, this will make the ONE range of boards unbeatable in the areas that get a little lost by many brands these days. We are making boards that will last they will handle the everyday paddling that you will want to be doing on the boards we make. Our boards maybe some of the lightest on the market but in no way are they fragile and this is a big part of the future for ONE.

We understand people do not want a board that they have to carry around in cotton wool and this is why all ONE boards are made to last and how you expect they should. This is the story of the ONE brand a brand as we think more about the customer than most, we are also a rider based brand from the very core and everyone involved in ONE has a passion for the sports we do.

ONE is a bunch of frothing ocean sport riders bringing to you the Best products, we will never be Rich but we are making a living of what we love doing and it show’s in our products.

We have not had it easy and upon starting ONE we poured every single cent we had saved into starting our business, still to this day we do the same. To us it doesn’t feel like it as we Love the Sport and we are doing what we love BOUNS! We are fitness freaks and have great work ethics, love racing and all things ocean.
